Companies House ID Verification: What Directors Need To Know

As part of new legal requirements under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, all company directors and persons with significant control (PSCs) must complete Companies House ID verification to ensure compliance with Companies House regulations.

New Companies House ID Verification Requirements

Identity verification will become mandatory in autumn 2025, but early action is advised to avoid potential delays or complications.

How to verify your identity

Option 1: Online using GOV.UK One Login – This is the recommended method if you have the necessary identity documents or information. This service is free.

1. Click the above link
2. If you need to create your account, this page lists the information you will
need to hand it before you attempt to verify yourself
3. Scroll down and click the green ‘Verify your identity’ button
4. It then asks if you have been verified already, please select ‘No’ and Continue
5. It then discusses various options on how to verify. Online, via an app, or in person. If doing this online, please click Continue. Alternatively, you can download the app
6. It then asks you to sign in to your ‘Gov.UK One Login. If you don’t have one set up, then you can select to create one at this stage, and this is where you need the identification documents listed on the earlier page
7. Once you’re logged in, it will ask you to confirm your details, and you can edit if anything is incorrect
8. Once you confirm, you’re verified

What happens next? (using Gov.UK option)

Option 2: Third-party verification via ThirdFort – For our clients that struggle with the above, we also have a backup option. We can facilitate identity verification through ThirdFort, a secure and trusted service. This is easier to use than the Gov.uk website, but there will be a cost of £20 for this option. So, this is a backup option if struggling with option 1.

Avoid Non-Compliance

Failure to complete identity verification will result in restrictions on filing company documents, financial penalties, or limitations on starting new companies.
